In 1830 Robert and his father William McVitie opended their first grocery in Edinburgh. Their bakery items were so popular that they slowly opened more bakeries around Edinburgh and later expanded to open a new factory outside London. In 1892 one of their employees created the recipe for the classic Digestive biscuit, still one of their bestsellers to this day.
