John Sumner, founder of Ty.phoo was born in Birmingham in 1856 where he initially had a drinks and food business. He started selling tea in his shop which had helped his sister with stomach trouble. He decided on the name Ty.phoo Tipps, ty.phoo part of the Chinese for doctor. 1905 he founded his tea company Ty.phoo Tea Ltd.
